Still Waters Open Weekend Jan 23 & 24 2010 « Result #4 on Dec 9, 2009, 11:28am »
We're able to host a number of "Open by Invitation" weekends at Still Waters next year. Here's what we have so far. $40 weekend/$25 day driver, $10 weekend/$5 day passenger.
First Weekend is Jan 23 & 24. Planning to schedule several more weekends in Feb and Mar and then our Fathers Day event in June.
Primitive camping / Boondocking on the Still Waters Ranch is FREE (we got an OK for it on a trial basis for the first weekend). RV hookups are available at the Oxford.
We'll have members there who know their way around the ranch to get you to and from the trails but, this is NOT a "guided event" as everyone out there will be paid participants. We will set up around 4 groups of comparably equipped rigs to go out together - the ranch is over 3,000 acres so without someone who knows their way around, you could spend hours looking for a trail or running a trail backwards and blocking another group. We haven't worked out exact hours but, it looks like 9 - 5 Sat and 9-3 Sun.
Basic Rules (mostly because someone did it, and made a bunch of us miserable): No latecomers! Gates Will be Locked. While we likely won't start promptly, and I'm willing to wait for a guy who calls me because of a flat on the way there, I've been strung along till after 1 in the afternoon waiting. No Unescorted Wheeling We've got trails that'll challenge any Jeep but, someone will want to show up late and attempt to run an extreme trail on a Dana 35 C-clip at 4 in the afternoon. No alcohol on the trail Save it for camp, I've seen the decisions some of us make perfectly sober. No Dogs We all love dogs, just not all dogs, like the one chasing cattle, or running between moving Jeeps. . .

Unfortunately, the WJ's (99-04) are prone to having a number of very expensive problems. The 4.7 V8 is prone to overheating and head problems - It must have twice as many parts as previous generation motors. The transmissions as well are prone to failures. If either of these fails plan around $3,000 for repairs. I'd avoid Quadra-Trac as permanent all-time four-wheel drive isn't necessary, sucks gas and causes more wear and tear.
If you are set on a WJ, I'd pay a little more for a 1-owner vehicle with maintenance records. Those skipped oil changes, transmission and radiator services tend to be their downfall at about 100K.
If you want a v8, I'd lean toward a clean ZJ (93-98) probably 96+ as the trim got a little more modern then. The 5.2 is the old 318 that's been around forever.
The I6 4.0 is adequate for light towing. If considering the I6, I'd also look at the small Cherokee (XJ). Body styling was modernized in 97 - 2001. The 2000/2001 engines are prone to head cracks but if it's fine as of now, I'd go for it and just plan on a radiator service.
Laredo, Limited, Orvis are all nice trim packages.

Buying another jeep « Result #6 on Dec 7, 2009, 2:21am »
Hi guys, It's been a while since I posted, because its been a while since I had my jeep.
Sadly, I had to sell my 92 YJ for far less than I had into it, being a college student with a ragged out old jeep I bought from a high school kid was taking groceries off my table.
But the good news is I have saved some money and am trying to give my current vehicle (99 s-10) to my little sister who just got her drivers license and am going to be in the market for a new jeep.
Unfortunately I need something with a little more space than my old wrangler, I have 2 dogs and a girlfriend (who has been mad at me for selling my jeep from day 1, and had a 95 grand cherokee before she passed it down to her little brother). So I'm in the market for a 99-04 WJ and need some Imput from you guys....
My price range is only around the mid 5K range, but I have found a lot for sale with around 100K miles with the average year of about 2002.
Can you guys push me in the right direction for engine/trim level etc? I wont get to do as much off roading as I would like since this will have to be my daily driver, which means gas mileage plays a small part. (I stress small, im broke but Im not gonna drive an echo.) I'll also be doing some seldom small boat towing.
Are their any specific problems I should look out for? What are the pros/cons of the classic versus the grand cherokee? You guys know best so please help me out!
I'll be looking to buy around january 20th, if anyone is looking to sell.

Great event! We had a great time. Thanks to all who organized and worked to make it happen. We appreciate the great spotting help to get us though some pretty rough stuff without a scratch.
